Greetings from our studio in the Highlands of Scotland, from where we send you our best wishes for 2017 in our 'wee' little film on Vimeo and from where we film and release all of the tutorials that make up our various video-on-demand box-sets available on artworkshopwithpaul via Vimeo - http://www.vimeo.com/artworkshopwithpaul

Painting is my life and my passion and it has been my pleasure to share that passion throughout the forty five years of my life as a Professional Fine Artist, Author of fourteen books and Presenter/Producer of the 498 online videos that are currently available.
Technique was a ‘dirty’ word when I was attending art college, because it was deemed to stifle creativity – I do not subscribe to that belief; which is why it is my philosophy to reveal all and hold nothing back.
Authenticity is key to our work ... which is why we select subjects as dedicated tutorials and film in real-time so that you get to watch-along with me from the absolute start to the very last stroke. Each tutorial is also accompanied by my running commentary throughout – so that you can work-along with me, without fear of missing any hint, tip, technique, brush-stroke or colour mix.

We are also mindful of our worldwide audience and the affordability of our tutorials … which is why we price them as low as possible. You can either rent each video from $1us … or better still, buy most of our tutorials outright … to watch time and time again, at a pace to suit you – which is something you can’t do when attending a class.

Each series of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting with Paul Taggart’ covers specific media and techniques in oils, acrylics, watercolours and pastels.
These are accompanied by companion ‘Painting Topical Techniques with Paul Taggart’ – all of which are detailed tutorials to help you further.
For example … ‘[Series 3] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, which concentrates on the method of working with impasto, features a study piece, followed by the main composition, both of which you can follow every step of the way.
In the companion ‘[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart’ you will find a tutorial on the basics of the impasto technique, followed by an Exercise tutorial. And there are more tutorials in this box-set which will prove invaluable in your painting repertoire, not just for when you’re using impasto.
‘Painting Equipment Focus with Paul Taggart’ is about the function of specific tools  in specific media and how to use them – such as brushes for watercolours, pastels sticks, texture paste, palettes and how to use them, mediums, etc.
‘Learn to Enjoy Colour Mixing with Paul Taggart’ is an on-going, build-up series in which I set out to demystify the art of colour mixing through a simplified approach – so that you can fully enjoy the experience of mixing colours for yourself, from a nucleus palette of just six colours.
There are also various ‘Workshops with Paul Taggart’ and ‘Out and About with Paul’ box-sets, which again, are detailed work-along tutorials – no speed-paintings, nothing is edited out, just me at my easel, sharing everything for you to follow.
‘Learn to Enjoy Painting Portraits and Figures with Paul Taggart’ is another on-going series, which we intend to build-up into a comprehensive index of tutorials. Starting off with a box-set in which I demonstrate the basics of features, how to draw and paint them.
And finally, ‘Masterclass with Paul Taggart’, in which you are invited to look over my shoulder as I work on sections of one of my own Principal Collection paintings.

We do hope that in sharing my passion and the traditional techniques that I use in my work, we can help you expand your repertoire of methods and enjoy your painting experience that little bit more.

As ever, this welcome comes with best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself

'[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart'

‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ 12 videos featuring over 12 hours detailed tuition. As with all subjects specifically selected to demonstrate specific techniques in our tutorials; this was chosen as particularly appropriate for demonstrating the technique of working with resists with watercolours, or other transparent media. Many folk avoid subjects where white elements come into play, as painting ‘white’ can often be seen as a challenge. This is where resists prove invaluable; but more than that, they can also be exploited to introduce ‘visual’ texture to a subject. Added, to which, they help in protecting areas where bright colours are required, such as in this composition, petals on a flower-head, sun-dappled grasses, super-white highlights. Underlying colours can also be protected to work against subsequently laid darker mixes.

'Workshop in Acrylics [suitable for Oils] with Paul Taggart'

'Workshop in Acrylics [suitable for Oils] with Paul Taggart'

Although demonstrated in slow-drying acrylics, the method and techniques used in this stand-alone Workshop box-set, comprising fourteen videos by Artist & Author Paul Taggart can be applied to oils. As with all of Paul’s tutorials, this is filmed in real-time, so that you can follow every colour mix and see every brush-stroke as it is applied from the very first stroke to the very last super-highlight. You get to watch every step and listen to Paul’s running commentary throughout – nothing is omitted and, as ever, this workshop is crammed with invaluable hints, tips and techniques. TIP – read the descriptions for individual videos in this box-set, which contain links to other tutorials which you might find helpful – i.e. Colour Mixing, Brushes, Aerial Perspective etc.

'Watch & Wander through the Elphen Chronicles with Paul Taggart'

'Watch & Wander through the Elphen Chronicles with Paul Taggart'

As many folk know, a little over twenty years ago we embarked on the first phase of a special project, Book 1 in my ‘Elphen Chronicles’. Now, after working intensely over the past five years on a substantial collection of large oil paintings, we are looking forward to sharing the second phase of this project, which centres on Book 2. All will be gradually revealed over the coming months through our occasional newsletter and FB etc. Meanwhile, do take care and thankyou for watching. If you are wondering about our online tutorials, be assured, we have made a commitment to continue with these and have no current plans to drop them. It is just that my Fine Art work continues to be concentrated on my Elphen Chronicles. We also wish to extend our grateful thanks to Sunita Gahir, who, as our Design Director & Co-Producer is enabling us to proceed with this project and is responsible for the new look for the Elphen Chronicles. 'Sketching Companions – Line & Wash Workshops and Sketches with Paul Taggart'

'Sketching Companions – Line & Wash Workshops and Sketches with Paul Taggart'

Welcome to the second of my ‘Sketching Companions with Paul Taggart’ box-sets -- in which you can watch-along with me as I work en plein air (in the field) on two different subjects; for which I use two quite different, but equally traditional Line & Wash methods. As with my first Sketching Companions box-set – vimeo.com/ondemand/paintingtutorials - don’t think of this purely in terms of watercolours, for everything shown here can be exploited for use with other media. For example, the tonal underpainting method used for the figure sketch could be rendered in oils – see this in action in Series 4 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, in which tonal underpainting is overlaid with transparent glazing mixes – vimeo.com/ondemand/paintinginoilsseries4/184912619 Use the two techniques demonstrated in this box-set as the inspiration to experiment with the media of your choice – be it acrylics, oils, pastels, inks, watercolour pencils, oil pastels etc.

‘On-going, Build-up Course -‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

‘On-going, Build-up Course -‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’

LEASE READ THIS DESCRIPTION and the DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS for EACH LESSON, so that you fully understand how this build-up series works. In this Series 4, Paul guides you through the exciting ‘art of glazing’. This is NOT about varnishing a painting, it IS ALL ABOUT that unique technique which ultimately enriches and enlivens an oil painting – glazing with transparent colours. To add glazing to your ‘kit’ of techniques is to take your oil painting to a whole new level – you will not regret it. Welcome to ‘[Series 4] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, one of a series of box-sets in which Artist & Author Paul Taggart is breaking down the traditional oil painting method into its three principal layers, so that you can fully understand their respective nature and function and thereby extend your painting repertoire.

Making GREEN work for you ‘[Series 1] Learn To Enjoy Colour Mixing with Paul Taggart’

Making GREEN work for you ‘[Series 1] Learn To Enjoy Colour Mixing with Paul Taggart’

"Every artist develops their own palette of preferred colours, but to arrive at this selection requires knowledge of not only the available colours, but how colours work with each other to produce successful mixes. Colour Mixing is every bit as important in making a composition work as thumbnails and perspective. With colour control you can communicate with your viewer, tell a story or evoke a mood - hence the phrase 'to paint a picture'. You would not be alone in thinking that colour mixing is a daunting prospect; every artist has been through this at some point - even professional artists such as myself. I guarantee however that it needn't be so - for colour mixing is actually about some basic and simple principles”

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels [Sketching] with Paul Taggart’

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels [Sketching] with Paul Taggart’

Welcome to ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels with Paul Taggart’ [Series 3], a collection of six videos that were inspired by the method used for ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’ - vimeo.com/ondemand/paintinginpastels3 – however, the ENTIRE BOX-SET is conceived to STAND-ALONE and everything you learn here will add substantially to your overall painting repertoire. Because you are working with a limited palette, you don’t have the luxury of being able to work through varying values of an extensive range of colours – WHAT YOU WILL LEARN throughout this series, is how to surface colour mix, how to exploit a limited palette – which will prove invaluable in extending your painting with pastels repertoire.

'Painting Topical Techniques with Paul Taggart COMPOSITION MATTERS’

'Painting Topical Techniques with Paul Taggart COMPOSITION MATTERS’

Ever wondered what to paint? How to decide on your composition? How to make your composition unique to you? How to accurately transfer the composition to your painting surface? Ever started in the middle of the blank surface and run out of space, or ended up with too much space to fill? Let Artist & Author Paul Taggart guide through the techniques that he uses to map out his own paintings, through this box-set of five detailed tutorials; which, as ever, are accompanied by his running commentary and a basketful of hints and tips which will make your painting experience all the more enjoyable.

'[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels (Sketching) with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels (Sketching) with Paul Taggart'

Unlike Artists’ Quality Soft Pastels, which Artist & Author Paul Taggart describe as ‘painting’ pastels; these somewhat harder Sketching Pastels can be somewhat limiting. However there are ways to work around these limitations, one of which is to work them over an underpainting to provide the darker accents and contrasting base, which has the benefit of also providing a firmer ‘tooth’. “Welcome to ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’ – together we are going to be exploring the possibilities of using SKETCHING PASTELS with a watercolour underpainting. In ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’ – we looked at a similar technique, again using watercolour underpainting. However, the difference between these two types of pastels, is such that it is more difficult to build up layers with the harder sketching pastels; which require a much bolder approach – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/paintinginpastels2 Because you are working with a limited palette, you don’t have the luxury of being able to work through varying values of an extensive range of colours. Because you are working with sketching pastels, you don’t have the opportunity to apply too many layers. Which is where this method and the techniques demonstrated really will prove invaluable – for they afford you the opportunity to exploit as many techniques as possible to manipulate your pastels. The method used here is adapted by me from my own traditional painting techniques.

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart'

Our surroundings, everything we see, is made of various textures; we feel these textures in everything we touch – but how to translate texture in our artworks? Through visual texture and physical texture. Visual texture is effected through the viscosity of your paint mixes, through how you exploit your brush-work, be it scuffs and scumbles, directional strokes and so on. Physical texture is achieved by creating texture on your surface with arbitrary or structural texture and through impasto paint mixes. This box-set takes you on a journey into Arbitrary Texture, Structural Texture and Visual Texture - containing seven videos covering five dedicated tutorials, on the basics of working with texture paste to create textures, working with arbitrary texture, working with structural texture, working with dry scuffs on textures and a detailed three-part exercise. All videos offer an invaluable alternative to oil painters as well, as explained fully in our detailed description.

'[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart'

'Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart [Series 3] – in which the method and technique is EQUALLY SUITABLE FOR WORKING IN OILS – building up the impasto layers with acrylics and texture paste, over which you can subsequently apply layers of oil paints, glazes and tints. Perfect for those who wish to work quickly and dynamically, as this method speeds up drying time. Paul introduces you to a dynamic method of achieving impasto when working with acrylic paints - which involves working with Texture Paste. Often mistakenly believed as purely for the crafter, texture paint is anything but; for it fulfils this invaluable function in painting with acrylics, which cannot be achieved by working with acrylic paints on their own. The method used here by Paul is vital in demonstrating how texture paste has a role in the fine art of acrylic painting and is adapted from traditional painting techniques as used in his Masterclasses and oil painting tutorials.

[Series 2] Masterclass with Paul Taggart - Oils on Gesso Panel

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart'

Welcome to Series 3 of ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Oils with Paul Taggart’ – a box-set of eight tutorials that were inspired by the method and techniques used by Paul in ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’; which focused on working with impasto, both as a technique in its own right and as the structural stage in the traditional layering method for oils. First-off, this box-set introduces you to the BASICS of working with impasto through a simple study; which encourages you to concentrate on the technique, rather than the subject. Following this you are then taken through an EXERCISE, which allows you to put the impasto technique into practice on another simple, but more structured subject – one that will help you get to grips with impasto mixes and directional brush-strokes.

'[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Watercolours with Paul Taggart’

Sometimes it is the simplest of tips that will elicit that “oh, so that’s how it’s done” revelations; so it doesn’t necessarily mean that a short video is less of a tutorial – it is more likely that Paul has distilled down what others may convey as an ‘oh-so-complicated’ technique or tip. No rambling, complicated explanations here. These are comprehensive, step-by-step tutorials filmed in real-time with Paul’s accompanying running commentary to help smooth the way and make your painting experience all the more enjoyable. Although ‘[Series 3] Painting Topical Techniques for Watercolour with Paul Taggart’ is a companion box-set to ‘[Series 3] Learn To Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ THIS BOX-SET WILL STAND YOU IN GOOD STEAD FOR ALL OF YOUR WATERCOLOUR PAINTING – for it not only contains the Basics and Exercise for Paul’s Combination Method it also contains the following additional essential tips and techniques. Overlaying Colours/Mixes - discover the power in your hands to alter the look of your subject through exploiting overlaid colours/mixes. Influence of Backgrounds – understanding how colours influence each other. Glazing – really? Glazing in watercolours? A simple demonstration and a powerful tool. Counterchange – its value in creating light. Moving Water in Perspective – need not be the ‘terrifying’ subject that others might lead you to believe it is.

'Workshop in Oils with Paul Taggart' (Alla Prima method, suitable for Acrylics)

'Workshop in Oils with Paul Taggart' (Alla Prima method, suitable for Acrylics)

Does the idea of painting horses and figures terrify you? It shouldn’t – all you need is a guiding hand and some friendly encouragement to help you gain the confidence. But don’t think of this as merely as a tutorial on how to paint horses and figures – for this is so much more than that; it is an invaluable demonstration of myriad traditional techniques that can be utilised with oils and with acrylics. See it for what it is; a tutorial that will add a host of hints, tips and techniques to add to your painting repertoire and as such, will help you to gain confidence and thus get far more enjoyment out of your painting experience. Here Paul uses the Alla Prima method to demonstrate the dynamism of working in layers using the Impasto technique to create structure, texture and a composition filled with detail that is, in fact, very suggestive in nature.

'[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart'

Welcome to ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ in which we pull together the techniques of Wet on Wet and Wet on Dry – previously covered in other box-sets, such as ‘[Series 1] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ and ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’. http://www.vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpaulwc1 http://www.vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpaulwc2 I refer to this method of working in three principal layers as the Combination Technique; the purpose of this method being to exploit the individual strengths of the Wet on Wet and Wet on Dry techniques, to produce a rich, clean watercolour, full of light, colour, depth and varying focus. The first layer of wet-on-wet is applied thinly and loosely to block in the lightest lights that appear in our subject; on which we will be building ever-darkening colours. The second layer of wet-on-wet offers us the chance to exploit the rich dark colours which can only be achieved with this exciting technique. The third layer of wet-on-dry is where focus and accents are manipulated to lead the viewer in the direction that you wish their journey through your subject to take. Getting used to handling watercolour paint in this form is really exciting, for it allows you to fully appreciate the power of painting in watercolours.

'[Series 2] Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 2] Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart'

‘Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart [Series 2]', a collection of seven videos – in each of which Paul concentrates on one technique or process. Do not think of these as paintings; forget the end result – instead, set your mind to practising the technique or process. This collection is not about the subject you are painting, it is about helping you gain a better understanding of the painting process and in so doing, you will find yourself enjoying the act of painting all the more. Even if you do not wish to paint in a traditional manner, you can exploit and adapt these techniques to further develop your own particular style and painting method.

'Out and About with Paul in Acrylics (suitable for any Opaque Medium) with Paul Taggart'

'Out and About with Paul in Acrylics (suitable for any Opaque Medium) with Paul Taggart'

This ‘Out and About with Paul’ box-set is not just about watching Artist & Author Paul Taggart at work, it is about working along with Paul; which is why there are seven, comprehensive tutorial videos that take you through each and every step needed to work on the fishing harbour scene painted here in Acrylics; an interesting subject, in which the distant backdrop buildings sweep up from a middle ground that gradually elevates from the foreground pier, which in turn rises above an ever-changing tidal sea level. You will follow Paul from his first thumbnail sketches, a method used to work out the composition, right through to the final highlights; using the process of working from dark to light with opaque paint mixes – a traditional technique that can be exploited for use with any opaque medium. Wishing to stay loose and brushy, Paul turns to his bristle brushes for this composition, only using softer brushes for the drawing stages. This more suggestive approach results in greater emphasis placed on visual texture to effect the varied surfaces of stone walls, grassy areas, rusting iron capstains, pitted woodwork, rippling water and so on.

'[Series 2] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 2] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels with Paul Taggart'

Welcome to ‘[Series 2] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels with Paul Taggart’, a companion set that emerged from ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Soft Pastels with Paul Taggart’ - in which Artist & Author Paul Taggart exploits his traditional method of layering in pastels from dark to light, built on a base layer painted with watercolours to achieve the darkest of accents. The six videos in this box-set also offers help on how to achieve aerial perspective and reflections in a landscape, as well as solving a couple of problems posted by Painting Companions; all of which will prove invaluable in your work when working with any pastels.

‘Painting & Drawing Workshops with Paul Taggart [Graphite Pencils & Sticks]'

‘Painting & Drawing Workshops with Paul Taggart [Graphite Pencils & Sticks]'

Some while ago I was asked for help with starting off in drawing which resulted in the first Equipment Focus on the basics of graphite pencils and sticks, which kicks off this build-up series of workshops - in which YOU CAN SEND US REQUESTS for SUBJECTS. Filmed in real-time, with no editing I take you on the first steps of a journey into this world by following through with an Equipment Focus on paper wipers for graphite, an essential element for your drawing kit. The accompanying Workshop shows an unusual approach to drawing, using graphite shavings and a kneadable putty erase. Adapted from one of the methods I use for working out the tonal values of a painting, this can be exploited as a stand-alone technique. Have you tried blending mediums for use with graphite? The Equipment Focus and accompanying Workshop may prove thought-provoking and provide you with even more ways to manipulate graphite for different results.

'[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Soft Pastels with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Soft Pastels with Paul Taggart'

Whilst Series 1 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’ takes you through the traditional technique of layering from dark to light using purely pastels; in Series 2 you will be preparing a watercolour underpainting to achieve those darks accents that occur in landscapes. You will be introduced to a raft of different techniques within this method of working, such as blending, scratching through, surface mixing and more. See this as an opportunity to explore this particular technique in pastel painting and in so doing, you will be expanding your repertoire of painting methods in Pastels. This course takes you through a couple of start-to-finish paintings which have been chosen for their linked subject matter. The main composition of a landscape vista, in which the sun is setting at the close of day, is dependent on aerial perspective and swathes of dark reliefs. And to prepare you for this, an intermediate landscape painting, featuring aerial perspective and dark recesses throughout the village scene and foreground foliage. This first detailed start-to-finish painting starts in Lesson 1 and continues in stages, through Lessons 2 & 3. After that, we start on the main step-by-step tutorial in Lesson 4.

'[Series 1] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels with Paul Taggart'

'[Series 1] Painting Topical Techniques for Pastels with Paul Taggart'

“Welcome to ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Soft Pastels with Paul Taggart’ [Series 1] – in which each video covers one particular technique to enhance your experience of painting in soft pastels. The term pastels can be confusing, for there are many different varieties and knowing what to choose and how to use them can be overwhelming. Which is why my tutorials on the subject focus on one specific type at a time and this box-set offers you possibilities for use with Artists’ Quality Soft Pastels. Opening with a detailed but simple study my aim is to show you what can be achieved using a range of tints in one colour to effectively understand how layering through the values is important in achieving volume and depth. Then I move on to a limited tonal palette of layering with a warm and cool colour, before moving through to a full colour palette and then on to a video about surface colour mixing. To accompany Learn to Enjoy Painting in Soft Pastels with Paul Taggart [Series 1] – you will find a tutorial dedicated to the subject of scaling up and down for a still-life and another on reflected lights in a still-life. Finally, I respond to two problems posted on my website, in a Problem Solver on surfaces, lights and highlights. As with all of our videos, these are filmed in real-time, so that you can watch every detail accompanied by my running commentary. Value for money is key to our Videos on Demand - which is reflected in the cost of this box-set that you can either rent or buy.” Best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and Paul

Series from $1 (us) per video - 'Painting & Drawing Workshops with Paul Taggart [Oil Pastels]' - Build-up Set

Welcome to my studio in the Highlands of Scotland. Some while ago I was asked for help with oil pastels which resulted in the first Workshop and accompanying Equipment Focus that kick off this build-up series of workshops - in which YOU CAN SEND US REQUESTS for SUBJECTS. Filmed in real-time, with no editing, in this introduction to working with Oil Pastels I take you on the first steps of a journey into the world of oil pastels ……………….. a medium that is more often than not dismissed as being merely for use by children and therefore underused as an adult medium. I set out in these workshops to show that this needn’t be the case and that oil pastels can be enjoyed even further by using them either in their ‘dry’ form, or exploiting their potential as a ‘wet’ medium, with brushes and thinners so that you can extend your repertoire of techniques. Use the Equipment Focus video in conjunction with the comprehensive Workshop 1 and hopefully you will be tempted into experimenting with a basic set of oil pastels. Workshop 1 is a complete tutorial – in which you are taken through each and every stroke from beginning to end ………….. accompanied by my running commentary throughout. The process used is of working from light to dark – in a similar manner to working in watercolour paints.

Whilst Series 1 is based on another traditional method, that of working in layers from dark to light; in Series 2 you will be working in layers from LIGHT to DARK to LIGHT. You will be introduced to a raft of different techniques within this method of working, such as working Wet on Dry and Wet on Wet, not to mention restricted wet-on-wet. See this as an opportunity to explore this particular technique in acrylic painting and in so doing, you will be expanding your repertoire of painting methods in acrylics.

Working with Line & Wash need not be about precise linework, nor need it be about detailed linework. In this box-set Paul shows how it can be about working in a manner that allows you to be dynamic, free-flowing and suggestive; using various tools for his linework as introduced in the Painting Equipment Focus video. In the four ‘Out and About with Paul’ tutorials, you are guided from the simplest of studies, executed with the lightest of touches, in which sunlight and reflections are the essence of the scene. Then on to another, where changing light conditions affect two views, captured at different times of the day – two structural studies, one a boat, the other a building. Thirdly, a two-part subject, in which a troupe of eight dancers performing for a brief fifteen minutes in an event, form a tableau of moving figures within a montage painting. Not only an object lesson in how to capture multiple full-figure portraits; but also an invaluable lesson in ‘painting’ white. Finally, a strong and bold subject, requiring a strong and bold approach completes this set; a set in which Paul works with different brushes and coloured inks for the linework and exploits several watercolour techniques for the ‘washes’ of colour.

“Welcome to Painting Topical Techniques for Watercolours with Paul Taggart [Series 2] – eight-video, box-set. Firstly basics of the Wet on Wet Technique followed by a wet-on-wet exercise. AERIAL PERSPECTIVE – essential in a landscape if you are to achieve volume and depth – otherwise your landscape will be flat. But this needn’t be difficult to understand, as Paul is at pains to demonstrate. LIGHT IN A LANDSCAPE – can be confusing – how to identify it, how does it work, how to accurately include it in your painting. LIFT-OFF – incredibly important in all watercolour painting techniques; but most ESPECIALLY IN THE WET-ON-WET TECHNIQUE and one that can be used in it’s own right as a painting technique , or as a method for making changes, or correcting mistakes. MASKING IN LAYERS – will come as a revelation for anyone who has been led to believe that it is merely for use with a single layer of paint. Here you will learn just how versatile this painting tool can be. REFLECTIONS IN A LANDSCAPE – kicks off with a series of simple diagrams with which Paul serves to explain in the simplest possible terms how reflections work in reality and reveal a simple method by which you can observe the nature of reflections. A Problem Solver makes up this set, in which Paul resolves a common issue shared online by one of our Painting Companions. Your repertoire of painting techniques will be changed forever; as will your confidence in working not only with watercolours, but with the Wet on Wet Technique in watercolours.” Best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and Paul

“Welcome to ‘Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart’ [Series 1] – in which each video covers one particular technique to enhance your experience of painting in acrylics. Acrylic painting is a medium that has multiple possibilities – it can be used thin or thick, transparently or opaquely; it can be used for collage and decollage and in a myriad other ways. As a fine art medium you can exploit its own unique characteristics, as well as adapt traditional oil painting and watercolour techniques. By adding to your painting repertoire in this way you will be able to develop your own unique method and style and it is only through being given the fundamental basics that you can do this. Let Paul help you by opening up the exciting world of acrylics. Through a series of Topical Techniques videos you will learn about working with thin mixes and with thick mixes; about blending, tonking and sgraffito, aerial perspective, not to mention the value of surface mixing. Through a series of Problem Solvers in answer to genuine queries posted online for Paul to resolve, you will learn about mixing a graduated colour on your palette, glazing, painting straight lines. There are two complete painting projects in Problem Solvers – using the same subject Paul shows how to produce one study using the Wet on Wet technique and a second study using the Wet on Dry technique – in this way you can concentrate on the method.

I have always felt that wet-on-wet is the ultimate technique in watercolour. Its fluidity and softness suggest movement and depth. Laying the colour onto a wet surface allows for a stronger concentration of pigment in the dark areas. FOR ANYONE NEW TO THE WET-ON-WET TECHNIQUE the sensation of freedom when applying the paint using this technique is terribly exciting. At first, there is a feeling of being slightly out of control; but stay with it, for once the flowing paint has been mastered the rewards are worthwhile. AS YOU GAIN CONFIDENCE you will learn to allow the paint to suggest detail, which at one time, you might have spent hours trying to create. This allows the qualities of the paint to shine through in all their beauty. I CAN ASSURE YOU that, with practice, you will begin to loosen up and begin to see exciting results. SO JOIN ME ON THIS WONDERFUL JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY as I guide you gently through everything you will need to enjoy this glorious and unique watercolour technique.

“Welcome to this build-up series of ‘Workshops in Watercolour Pencils with Paul Taggart’. Some while ago Paul was asked for help with using watercolour pencils and was delighted to oblige with the first Workshop and Equipment Focus, both of which kick off this new idea for a build-up series of workshops. These first two videos [Episodes 1 & 2] proved exceedingly popular when first released and we have have since been asked for more. So we thought you might like to tell us what you would suggest by way of subject for the next workshop; which will be added here once it has been filmed. We will base the subject for the next workshops on the most popular requests; which could be yours. As with the first Watercolour Pencils Workshop and Equipment Focus, the new tutorial will be filmed in real-time, so that you can watch every drawing mark and every brush-stroke, from the first steps in the composition to the final touches. Close-up shots will also let you see surface colour mixing, directional strokes, softening edges and so much more. From the opening shot to the closing frame you not only see everything I

Welcome to ‘Out and About with Paul’ where you join me at my easel during two different events hosted by Foulis Castle here in the Northern Highlands of Scotland. On both occasions it was our pleasure to donate my finished painting to each respective beneficiary, for fund-raising purposes. AND WE FILMED THE ENTIRE PROCESS FROM START-TO-FINISH, SO THAT EACH COULD BE FOLLOWED AS A TUTORIAL IN MY COMBINATION TECHNIQUE FOR WATERCOLOURS; WORKING IN LAYERS FROM LIGHT TO DARK. The combination technique utilises the Wet on Wet technique for the first two layers; with the third layer bringing the Wet on Dry into play for final details, focus and accents.

Whilst Series 1 of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils deals with the more traditional technique, based on a combination of techniques, working in layers from dark to light and lean to fat – each technique within that combination can be used as a method of painting - vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshopwithpauloils1 Series 2 is based on the first of the three principal techniques that make up the ‘combination’ method – normally the underlying ‘lean’ layer. In this course I guide you through the process of using it as a stand-alone technique for producing oil paintings, merely using thinners. If you are new to painting in oils, nothing could be simpler than to practice a few oil sketches using a basic set of paints, some brushes and a thinner. For those who already work in oils, this is also ideal if you wish to explore the possibilities of working out of doors without spending too much time on detail. This technique can be worked either wet on dry or wet on wet – how you choose to exploit its potential is entirely up to you – because as with everything in painting, it is a matter of personal choice.

Although demonstrated as a mixed-media painting in Acrylics with Soft Pastels; the principles of this traditional layering technique of working from dark-to-light are equally suitable for painting with oil paints and/or for painting with acrylics as stand-alone media. Similarly, the underpainting layer can be executed in watercolours. Welcome to ‘Out and About with Paul’ where you join Artist and Author Paul Taggart in this ‘live’ workshop, that was originally held to raise funds for the Invergordon Lifeboat Station 40th Anniversary in 2014. SUBJECT – the beautiful fishing village of Portmahomack is situated on the east coast of the Northern Highlands of Scotland and Paul explains why he selected the particular view looking along the sweep of the harbour beach. As requests from the organisers (Portmahomack Art Group) were for acrylics and, or, soft pastels, we decided to combine the two into a mixed media workshop, as this gave Paul the opportunity to demonstrate the two-fold effectiveness of an acrylic underpainting in providing not only dark complementary accents, but also a tooth on which to build layers of soft pastels.

The experience of painting in watercolours can vary considerably. There are the three principal techniques for instance – Line & Wash : Wet on Dry and Wet on Wet. Each of which can be exploited. Any of which can be combined. All of which can be developed by you to achieve your personal style. FOR THIS SERIES Paul exploits the Wet on Dry technique in Watercolours to demonstrate a simple land/seascape that has a vista of a composition. This allows him to demonstrate how aerial perspective works, how recession and focus works, how reflections work, how movement is captured and how to introduce figures, without the need for a comprehensive understand of figure painting. This series of lessons would suit complete beginners and those seeking to understand the Wet on Dry technique in watercolours.
