Greetings from our studio in the Highlands of Scotland, where we film and release all of the tutorials that make up our various online, video-on-demand (VOD) box-sets.
Painting is my life and my passion and it has been my pleasure to share that passion over forty-five years of my life as a Professional Fine Artist, Author of fourteen books and Presenter/Producer of over 600 online videos that are currently available via my official account on Vimeo - http://www.vimeo.com/artworkshopwithpaul
Technique was a ‘dirty’ word when I attended art college, because it was deemed to stifle creativity – I do not subscribe to that belief ... which is why it is my philosophy to reveal all and hold nothing back, both in my books and now, in my online video tutorials.
Although my how-to books provided a marvellous vehicle in which to reveal the tehniques that I believe in, imagine our thrill when the internet provided us with a vehicle for sharing those techniques in a comprehensive way and as I work along at my easel ... which is why we embraced the opportunity to film in real-time, so that you can watch the entire painting process of an artwork, from start-to-finish, without any editing - including mistakes and how to rectify them. Each video is accompanied by my running commentary throughout, which reveals a detailed explanation of the materials, the technique and the thinking process – so that you can work-along with me, without fear of missing any hint, tip, technique, brush-stroke or colour mix.
You can either stream the videos, watching them in your account on Vimeo; or download them for personal use, so that you can watch on any device, taking them wherever you go.
You can watch along at a pace to suit you and, unlike attending classes, can return to them time and time again - they are in effect your painting companions for as long as want them to be.
We are also mindful of our worldwide audience and the affordability of our tutorials … which is why we price them as low as possible - although there are now a number of additional digital and purchase taxes that have been introduced since we started videos online, which have to be taken into account. You can rent an individual video for $1 and in some cases TRY-BEFORE-YOU-BUY with FREE-TO-VIEW 'ArtBytes from Paul' Bonus Feature videos - so that you can sample my tutoring method and make an informed choice about me and the content of the box-set - featuring little gems selected from videos in that particular box-set.
We do hope that in sharing my passion and the traditional techniques that I use in my work, we can help you expand your repertoire of methods and enjoy your painting experience that little bit more.
As ever, this welcome comes with best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself,

eight episodes, box-set total running time 6hours 47minutes
Having broken down the Basics of Colour Mixing, into a comprehensive collection of easy-to-follow tutorials in Series 1, which cover the nucleus palette of six colours, we now move on to Series 2. Whilst nearly all the colour mixes you will ever need can be achieved with this palette of six colours, when it comes to working with opaque mediums, such as oil painting and acrylics, you will also need white for your colour mixes. In this box-set I deal specifically with the two whites that will serve you well for oil painting – starting off, in Part 1, with a detailed introduction to the paints themselves and their specific function.  Identifying whites in your subjects, analysing their nature and their colour make-up is covered in Part 2, as is the method by which to create successful white mixes, for the nature of white varies considerably and understanding this will help you achieve better results in your artworks. Then I move on to using the two specific whites in a couple of exercises. Firstly, in Parts 3 to 7, the function of Titanium White as a ‘painting white’ is covered in detail in a step-by-step study of a snowscene … as is the process of making white-based colour  and subsequent application.

'[Series 3] MASTERCLASS in Oils with Paul Taggart'
eight-episodes, box-set total running time 7hours 26minutes
The focus and purpose of this Masterclass box-set is to share with you the method for rendering a ‘moving’ figure within a landscape; to share with you my thought-process and the traditional techniques/method that are the basis of my Masterworks oil paintings. Just as we do with all of my online video tutorials, nothing is withheld as you get to watch from start-to-finish, each layer of the process of rendering the figure, working from dark-to-light – accompanied by my running commentary and footage of my colour mixing on the palette. Close-up footage captures those all-important layers; from the thin underpainting through the impasto layer and the rich quality of glazes, not to mention the subtle, yet powerful effects of tints, to the final super-highlights. Throughout the eight videos, we also feature a reprise of the overall work as I complete each layer; in order that you can follow the development of the surrounding landscape as you watch the figure being brought to life through my colour mixes and brush-strokes.

As with all subjects specifically selected to demonstrate specific techniques in our tutorials; this was chosen as particularly appropriate for demonstrating the technique of working with resists with watercolours, or other transparent media. Many folk avoid subjects where white elements come into play, as painting ‘white’ can often be seen as a challenge. This is where resists prove invaluable; but more than that, they can also be exploited to introduce ‘visual’ texture to a subject. Added, to which, they help in protecting areas where bright colours are required, such as in this composition, petals on a flower-head, sun-dappled grasses, super-white highlights. Underlying colours can also be protected to work against subsequently laid darker mixes.

TECHNIQUE - For the composition we are working with a three-stage system for creating physical texture. Physical texture may seem a little strange for pastels, which are generally simply applied to pastel paper or to a surface that has a ‘tooth’. To explain this fully, I refer to the study that was created for [Series 2], the view of an Italian village. In this you will see that all of the textures are created visually; they are ‘visual’ textures that rely solely on the texture of the ‘tooth’ of the surface on which the pastel painting is worked. Imagine, if instead of simply relying on the tooth of the pastel paper, you could create and therefore control, the texture over which the pastel is laid. This would also allow you the opportunity to create a stronger base, one that would enable you to apply more layers of pastel – which, in turn, gives you the opportunity to exploit the richness of these pigments, much as you would when working in layers with the traditional technique of working from the darkest accents through to the super-highlights. Furthermore, this controlled application would result in ‘structural’ texture, as opposed to merely ‘visual’ texture. For which I am using texture paste. In the ten lessons in this box-set I take you step-by-step from the first strokes of texture paste right through to the finishing highlights on this composition. Everything you need to work-along with me and, as with all of my tutorials, each lesson is filmed in real-time and nothing is held back. There is no editing-out, no speed-painting, no skipping stages.

Does the idea of painting horses and figures terrify you? It shouldn’t – all you need is a guiding hand and some friendly encouragement to help you gain the confidence. But don’t think of this as merely as a tutorial on how to paint horses and figures – for this is so much more than that; it is an invaluable demonstration of myriad traditional techniques that can be utilised with oils and with acrylics. See it for what it is; a tutorial that will add a host of hints, tips and techniques to add to your painting repertoire and as such, will help you to gain confidence and thus get far more enjoyment out of your painting experience. Here Paul uses the Alla Prima method to demonstrate the dynamism of working in layers using the Impasto technique to create structure, texture and a composition filled with detail that is, in fact, very suggestive in nature.

“The techniques in this workshop are based on traditional oil painting techniques and as such, the workshop is therefore suitable for working with oils. Follow along as I work on this panoramic view and you will learn how aerial perspective not only exists in that distant mountain range, but is every bit as important in correctly working up the foreground barley field. All achieved through exploiting colour mixing to create the necessary change in values. See how one-point perspective comes into play in the clouds. How two-point perspective is successfully rendered through directional brush-strokes. What about that horizontal band of dark trees running right through the middle of the composition? I deliberately chose that as a device against which to contrast the bright golden colours of the barley field and the emerald green of the middle distance fields. All of which is explained in my detailed running commentary and demonstrated in real-time filming, which features invaluable close-up shots that show every brush-stroke, from the very first drawing out stage to the finishing touches.”

This method would suit anyone wishing to produce oil painting sketches, or more detailed paintings and is one that would also help anyone wishing to make the transition from acrylics to oils. The versatility and beauty of this method being that you can be as loose as you want, or as detailed as you feel the subject requires. In this workshop Paul has opted for a mixed approach, reacting to the individual elements within the scene, in terms of not only the linework and the tonal underpainting, but also in regard to the manner in which I exploit glazes and tints. Don’t think of this as a tutorial simply about the method, for it is much more than that. This process will also help you learn about tone and value, the underlying acrylic layer in which you will ‘sculpt’ volume and form; essential in effecting the three-dimensional quality in your painting. Your knowledge of colour mixing will develop, both when mixing very specific colours on the palette and on the surface, as coloured glazes are laid over each other.

'[Series 2] MASTERCLASS in Oils with Paul Taggart'
ten-episodes, box-set total running time 10hours 4minutes
Traditional techniques form the cornerstone of Paul’s work – which require time and deliberation. Light and water are the two elements in our world that excites him most as an artist, which form the basis of his choice of subject for his selling collections. Light – for its effect on our surroundings, its ability to deceive the eye and how forms seem to alter with the change in direction of falling light as the sun arcs through from sunrise to sunset, its creation of the deepest and richest of shadows – a source of continual change in any subject; one that requires the artist in us to observe and analyse what we see before us. Water – for its luminescent and reflective properties, its movement and mysterious depths, its chameleon-like qualities in taking on the colours of its surroundings – a source of constant change in any composition.

seventeen episodes, box-set total running time 17hours 4minutes
The purpose of this box-set is to help in the understanding of how to exploit the Impasto layer as a painting technique in its own right – most commonly the middle ‘layer’, through which structure and texture is built, working from dark to light. Here viewers will learn how to exploit the middle impasto layer, working with stiff, tube-consistency paint; which Paul describes as the “…essence of oil painting itself.” Getting used to handling oil paint in this form is really essential to get the full benefit of what oil painting can actually become. This is an exciting technique - get to grips with it through this box-set and viewers will find themselves on a rich and stimulating journey. Paintings will come alive with character, every element within them imbued with texture, structure, volume and form.
Inspired by the methods and technique used in the above seventeen lessons, a box-set of eight tutorials, featuring - the BASICS of working with impasto through a simple study; which encourages you to concentrate on the technique, rather than the subject. Then an EXERCISE, which allows you to put the impasto technique into practice that will help you get to grips with impasto mixes and directional brush-strokes. Knowing how to work with IMPASTO GRADUATED COLOURS, both the mixing process and the application on your painting surface becomes second nature, when you know how. What is the difference between CAST SHADOWS and VOLUME SHADOWS? Again, easy to determine when you know how as is IMPASTO STRUCTURAL BLENDING, IMPASTO VISUAL TEXTURES, NEGATIVE PAINTING and REWETTING A DRIED PAINTING when working with IMPASTO.

In which the method and technique is EQUALLY SUITABLE FOR WORKING IN OILS – building up the impasto layers with acrylics and texture paste, over which you can subsequently apply layers of oil paints, glazes and tints. Perfect for those who wish to work quickly and dynamically, as this method speeds up drying time. Paul introduces you to a dynamic method of achieving impasto when working with acrylic paints - which involves working with Texture Paste. Often mistakenly believed as purely for the crafter, texture paint is anything but; for it fulfils this invaluable function in painting with acrylics, which cannot be achieved by working with acrylic paints on their own. The method used here by Paul is vital in demonstrating how texture paste has a role in the fine art of acrylic painting and is adapted from traditional painting techniques as used in his Masterclasses and oil painting tutorials.
CHECK OUT the companion box-set 'Painting Topical Techniques for Acrylics with Paul Taggart [Series3]' Our surroundings, everything we see, is made of various textures; we feel these textures in everything we touch – but how to translate texture in our artworks? Through visual texture and physical texture. Visual texture is effected through the viscosity of your paint mixes, through how you exploit your brush-work, be it scuffs and scumbles, directional strokes and so on. Physical texture is achieved by creating texture on your surface with arbitrary or structural texture and through impasto paint mixes. This box-set takes you on a journey into Arbitrary Texture, Structural Texture and Visual Texture - containing seven videos covering five dedicated tutorials, on the basics of working with texture paste to create textures, working with arbitrary texture, working with structural texture, working with dry scuffs on textures and a detailed three-part exercise. All videos offer an invaluable alternative to oil painters as well, as explained fully in our detailed description.

Unlike Artists’ Quality Soft Pastels, which Artist & Author Paul Taggart describe as ‘painting’ pastels; these somewhat harder Sketching Pastels can be somewhat limiting. However there are ways to work around these limitations, one of which is to work them over an underpainting to provide the darker accents and contrasting base, which has the benefit of also providing a firmer ‘tooth’. “Welcome to ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’ – together we are going to be exploring the possibilities of using SKETCHING PASTELS with a watercolour underpainting. In ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Pastels with Paul Taggart’ – we looked at a similar technique, again using watercolour underpainting. However, the difference between these two types of pastels, is such that it is more difficult to build up layers with the harder sketching pastels; which require a much bolder approach. Because you are working with a limited palette, you don’t have the luxury of being able to work through varying values of an extensive range of colours. Because you are working with sketching pastels, you don’t have the opportunity to apply too many layers. Which is where this method and the techniques demonstrated really will prove invaluable – for they afford you the opportunity to exploit as many techniques as possible to manipulate your pastels. The method used here is adapted by me from my own traditional painting techniques.

I refer to this method of working in three principal layers as the Combination Technique; the purpose of this method being to exploit the individual strengths of the Wet on Wet and Wet on Dry techniques, to produce a rich, clean watercolour, full of light, colour, depth and varying focus. The first layer of wet-on-wet is applied thinly and loosely to block in the lightest lights that appear in our subject; on which we will be building ever-darkening colours. The second layer of wet-on-wet offers us the chance to exploit the rich dark colours which can only be achieved with this exciting technique. The third layer of wet-on-dry is where focus and accents are manipulated to lead the viewer in the direction that you wish their journey through your subject to take. Getting used to handling watercolour paint in this form is really exciting, for it allows you to fully appreciate the power of painting in watercolours.
CHECK OUT the companion box-set 'Painting Topical Techniques for Watercolours with Paul Taggart [Series 3]'.  Sometimes it is the simplest of tips that will elicit that “oh, so that’s how it’s done” revelations; so it doesn’t necessarily mean that a short video is less of a tutorial – it is more likely that Paul has distilled down what others may convey as an ‘oh-so-complicated’ technique or tip. No rambling, complicated explanations here. These are comprehensive, step-by-step tutorials filmed in real-time with Paul’s accompanying running commentary to help smooth the way and make your painting experience all the more enjoyable. THIS BOX-SET WILL STAND YOU IN GOOD STEAD FOR ALL OF YOUR WATERCOLOUR PAINTING – for it not only contains the Basics and Exercise for Paul’s Combination Method it also contains the following additional essential tips and techniques. Overlaying Colours/Mixes - discover the power in your hands to alter the look of your subject through exploiting overlaid colours/mixes. Influence of Backgrounds – understanding how colours influence each other.  Glazing – really? Glazing in watercolours? A simple demonstration and a powerful tool. Viewers will soon recognise that enthusiasm and will benefit from over forty years of Paul’s experience spent sharing his knowledge and traditional techniques through his fourteen books and hundreds of online video tutorials. As with all of Paul’s tutorials, the sixteen specific lessons and three Problem Solvers in this pick’n’mix box-set are packed full of helpful hints and tips and illuminating facts that will encourage you on this journey into the world of painting portraits and figures. Nothing is held back, as Paul takes you right back to the basics on the various Features that make up the human head - for as he explains, to fully enjoy the rewarding experience of painting figures, or portraits, you do need the bare facts; for how else would you know what to do to correct something that is going wrong - or for that matter know when something is going right. But this set of tutorials is so much more than that, for each video provides detailed instruction on how to paint and draw. You will also learn about brush and pencil strokes, about colour mixing and paint loading, about creating volume and depth, about light and shade, about a variety of techniques. So throw away those preconceived ideas that painting figures and portraits is difficult; it is no more difficult than painting a landscape or a still-life – it is all a question of being shown how to approach the subject.

Whilst ‘[Series 1] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’ deals with the more traditional method of working in layers from dark to light and lean to fat, based on a combination of techniques – each technique within that combination can also be used as a method of painting in its own right.
thirteen-episodes, box-set total running time 14hours:11minutes - Series 2 is based on the first of the three principal techniques that make up the ‘combination’ method and it is the technique in which you will work purely with thinners. Normally this would be the underlying ‘thinned’ layer; but in this series Paul guides you through the process of using it as a stand-alone technique. If you are new to painting in oils, nothing could be simpler than to practice a few oil sketches using a basic set of paints, some brushes and a thinner. For those who already work in oils, this is also ideal if you wish to explore the possibilities of working out of doors without spending too much time on detail. This technique can be worked either wet on dry or wet on wet. See this as an opportunity to explore this particular technique in oil painting and in so doing, you will also become excited about how you can develop it in conjunction with impasto and glazing for a more traditional approach.

Traditional techniques form the cornerstone of Artist & Author Paul Taggart’s work – which require time and deliberation. This considered approach means that oil paintings take many weeks, if not months and in some cases years, to produce. Followers of Paul tutorials are equally fascinated to get to grips with the traditional techniques, to have a greater understanding of them and so it is we film a selected number of Masterclasses, focusing on one particular painting at a time. However, to film each and every stroke as Paul paints would involve a monumental amount of filming and viewing time – which is why in these Masterclasses we focus on one particular section (perhaps one other), so that you can watch that develop from start to finish. This boxed-set of six videos takes you through my traditional layering technique of working from dark to light; you can watch as Eileen’s camera tracks every brush-stroke, every colour mix, every detail – with close-ups revealing the results of maximising specific techniques such as glazing and tinting. Through Paul’s running commentary you will pick up a host of techniques, hints, tips and more as he describes his actions, his thought process, his method, his colour mixes. You will learn about glazing, about tinting, about sgraffito, about tonking. Nothing is left out, for Paul does not believe in holding anything back. 'Sketching Companions –
Line & Wash Workshops and Sketches
with Paul Taggart'

three-episodes, box-set total running time 2hours:37minutes
Welcome to the second of my ‘Sketching Companions with Paul Taggart’ box-sets -- in which you can watch-along with me as I work en plein air (in the field) on two different subjects; for which I use two quite different, but equally traditional Line & Wash methods. Don’t think of this purely in terms of watercolours, for everything shown here can be exploited for use with other media. For example, the tonal underpainting method used for the figure sketch could be rendered in oils – see this in action in Series 4 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Oils with Paul Taggart’, in which tonal underpainting is overlaid with transparent glazing mixes.

Some while ago Paul was asked for help with starting off in drawing which resulted in the first Equipment Focus on the basics of graphite pencils and sticks. Filmed in real-time, with no editing Paul take you on the first steps of a journey into this world by following through with an Equipment Focus on paper wipers for graphite, an essential element for your drawing kit. The accompanying Workshop shows an unusual approach to drawing, using graphite shavings and a kneadable putty erase. Adapted from one of the methods Paul uses for working out the tonal values of a painting, this can be exploited as a stand-alone technique. Have you tried blending mediums for use with graphite? The Equipment Focus and accompanying Workshop may prove thought-provoking and provide you with even more ways to manipulate graphite for different results. As with all of our tutorials, you are taken through each and every stroke from beginning to end - accompanied by Paul’s running commentary throughout.

containing little gems from each lesson in this box-set – ‘Sketching Companions, Line & Wash Workshops in Oils, Watercolours, Pastels, Acrylics with Paul Taggart’.  Sketching is not all about ‘drawing’, nor is it simply about working with a pencil. So let me take you on a journey into the world of ‘sketching’ and working with washes of colour – otherwise known as Line & Wash. Through this ‘taster’ box-set I aim to encourage you to experiment with different materials, approaches and techniques. So do not think of these in terms of workshops specifically suitable for each of the four principal mediums. Instead, use these four complete workshops as a way of extending your repertoire and expanding your approach to working with various mediums. By experimenting in this way you will enjoy your sketching and painting experience all the more.

Some while ago Paul was asked for help with using watercolour pencils and was delighted to oblige with the first Workshop and Equipment Focus. Filmed in real-time, with no editing, this introduction to working with Watercolour Pencils should be seen not only as a tutorial for the medium in its own right; but as the opportunity to understand how useful this medium can be as a reference-gathering tool for working in other media – especially when travelling with baggage restrictions; for they form perfect travelling companions, along with a small watercolour sketchbook.

Some while ago I was asked for help with oil pastels which resulted in the first Workshop and accompanying Equipment Focus. Filmed in real-time, with no editing, in this introduction to working with Oil Pastels I take you on the first steps of a journey into the world of oil pastels - a medium that is more often than not dismissed as being merely for use by children and therefore underused as an adult medium. I set out in these workshops to show that this needn’t be the case and that oil pastels can be enjoyed even further by using them either in their ‘dry’ form, or exploiting their potential as a ‘wet’ medium, with brushes and thinners so that you can extend your repertoire of techniques.

Each video in this box-set concentrates on one painting tool, how to exploit its characteristics and how to maximise its usage. It has always been my belief that being shown how to work effectively with a limited painting kit is far more fulfilling than possessing vast quantities of brushes, paints etc. Which is why my acrylic tutorials are based on a core kit. Six Acrylic Paints plus White - the six-colour nucleus of the colour circle, from which you can mix nearly all of the colours ever needed – plus white for use in this opaque medium. Although I discuss a wide range of brushes for this medium which can be used with thick or thin paint - my own kit comprises one medium sized round soft-haired brush, one round bristle brush, one flat nylon brush for lifting off and a Hake brush for wetting the surface. Mediums - In Acrylic painting there are a number of mediums, offering a wide variety of opportunities to work with acrylic paint from the thinnest of mixes to the thickest of textured brush-strokes. Not only do I show you those which I favour for use with my various acrylic painting techniques; but I also show the effects through a separate video on Mediums in Use. Palettes - although you can use any non-absorbent surface as a palette, in this video I introduce you to the stay-wet palette and how to make your own version. Stretched Watercolour Paper - the sheer frustration of not stretching paper successfully is known to everyone – something I hope to help you overcome with this detailed and simple guide. Surfaces – anything can be used as a surface on which to paint with acrylics; but again I concentrate on three particular methods of producing my own surface; which gives me total control of the result I am aiming for. As with all of my videos, these are filmed in real-time, so that you can watch every detail accompanied by my running commentary.

containing little gems from each lesson in this box-set – 'Out and About with Paul' Brush Line & Wash in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ - Working with Line & Wash need not be about precise linework, nor need it be about detailed linework. In this box-set Paul shows how it can be about working in a manner that allows you to be dynamic, free-flowing and suggestive; using various tools for his linework as introduced in the Painting Equipment Focus video. In the four tutorials, you are guided from the simplest of studies, executed with the lightest of touches, in which sunlight and reflections are the essence of the scene. Then on to another, where changing light conditions affect two views, captured at different times of the day - two structural studies, one a boat, the other a building. Thirdly, a two-part subject, in which a troupe of eight dancers performing for a brief fifteen minutes in an event, form a tableau of moving figures within a montage painting. Not only an object lesson in how to capture multiple full-figure portraits; but also an invaluable lesson in ‘painting’ white. Finally, a strong and bold subject, requiring a strong and bold approach completes this set; a set in which Paul works with different brushes and coloured inks for the linework and exploits several watercolour techniques for the ‘washes’ of colour.

The significance of the Elphen Eggs is also revealed in this chapter highly decorated with Elphen Gemstones, they bear a precious cargo between Shimmistra and Earth. These vignettes are quite different to my Masterworks oil paintings - one of which you can watch being created from the very first drawing-out stage, to the final finishing highlights in another series of Watch & Wander. This Masterworks is destined to be the Artist’s Legacy First Edition book jacket – http://www.vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles Watch out for the Bonus Features and Trailer in that series too, in which you get to see more of these large Masterworks oil paintings – each of which appears as a full-plate within the chapters of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’-http://www. vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles/243564274

Welcome to ‘Watch & Wander through Paul Taggart's Elphen Chronicles’. You join me in our studio in the Highlands of Scotland from where we invite you to experience the ‘collaborative’ work involved in producing an illustrated fantasy book, such as ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ – the second book in my Elphen Chronicles. This particular build-up series, which centers on my unique collection of Oil Painting Vignettes not only chronicles some of the work produced for specific chapters. We are also sharing with you some of the editorial and design work, which is crucial in arriving at our goals for the final result.

'Watch & Wander through the Elphen Chronicles with Paul Taggart'

As many folk know, a little over twenty years ago we embarked on the first phase of a special project, Book 1 in my ‘Elphen Chronicles’. Now, after working intensely over the past five years on a substantial collection of large oil paintings, we are looking forward to sharing the second phase of this project, which centres on Book 2. All will be gradually revealed over the coming months through our occasional newsletter and FB etc. Meanwhile, do take care and thankyou for watching. If you are wondering about our online tutorials, be assured, we have made a commitment to continue with these and have no current plans to drop them. It is just that my Fine Art work continues to be concentrated on my Elphen Chronicles. We also wish to extend our grateful thanks to Sunita Gahir, who, as our Design Director & Co-Producer is enabling us to proceed with this project and is responsible for the new look for the Elphen Chronicles.
