The Joy of Colour Mixing - from artworkshopwithpaul
Painting is my life and my passion and it has been my pleasure to share that passion throughout the forty five years of my life as a Professional Fine Artist. The act of painting is every bit as meaningful to me, as is the end result and part of that process is the sheer joy that comes from analysing the colour of any specific subject or element within it.

Greetings from our studio in the Highlands of Scotland,

Painting is my life and my passion and it has been my pleasure to share that passion throughout the forty five years of my life as a Professional Fine Artist. The act of painting is every bit as meaningful to me, as is the end result and part of that process is the sheer joy that comes from analysing the colour of any specific subject or element within it.

I describe the process of creating an artwork as painting with light; for you need light and shade to achieve volume, depth and form. What is common in all aspects of this?
Colour is the answer and the myriad graduations of hues, values and intensity which occur in any single object, however simple.

So how do we, as artists, achieve those colours?

Well ... we could simply buy an enormous range of different tubes of paint .... or .... we could stick to just six and mix at least 95% of the colours we will ever need for any composition.

We could stop our painting and fish around in an enormous pile of tubes of paint to find the one we need, unscrew the top and squeeze out a blob of colour to add to the ever-increasing number of colours on our crowded-out palette .... or .... we could simply turn to the six colours we already have on our palette and take a little from here and a little from there and mix the exact colour we need.

  • Some would have you believe colour mixing is complicated – it isn’t.
  • Some would have you believe you need precise formulae – you don’t.
  • Some would have you believe colour mixing is tedious – it isn’t; far from it, it is one of the most rewarding aspects of painting.
  • Some would have you believe colour mixing is time consuming – it isn’t; far from it, nothing is quicker and less distracting than turning to your palette and mixing immediately.

In every tutorial in my fourteen books and nearly 400 videos I use my basic palette of six colours. Just think how boring those tutorials would be if those six colours didn’t give me the colour mix I needed for every aspect of those tutorials.

Even metallic objects are achievable with six colours – no need for a special set of colours for painting silver, gold and copper.

So let us share with you my passion for colour mixing in our growing collection ‘Learn to Enjoy Colour Mixing with Paul Taggart’; in which we set out to demystify the ‘art’ of colour mixing through simple, yet comprehensive explanations and demonstrations and work-along exercises. We have just released ‘making RED work for you’ on artworkshopwithpaul via Vimeo – http://www.vimeo.com/artworkshopwithpaul
